We travelled down by train on the 4th (first class woohoo!). Journey went fine until we got to Penrith (in Cumbria, near the Lake District), when the train stopped and didn't move again for 40 minutes. This meant we'd missed our connection in Crewe to get the faster train to London. Instead because of the delay we didn't have to change trains and we were rerouted onto the faster rail line, bypassing the Midlands stations. It meant we arrived in Euston 31 minutes late - meaning we qualified for the automatic 50% refund for journeys running 30 minutes late XD
We had dinner at a French Restaurant at Euston Station before going to St. Pancras and getting the high speed train to the Medway towns where we'd be staying visiting friends.
The next day we went to Leeds Castle (which isn't anywhere near the city of Leeds), and if you're ever in Kent I highly recommend it. The castle is set in 500 acres of formal gardens and woodland with streams and a boating lake and birdlife galore! We saw Black swans with their cygnets, Coots with their young, Moorhens with their young, Ducks with their ducklings, Barnacle geese, Greylag geese, Muscovy ducks, Whooper Swans and Peacocks among others. They're very tame and will demand to get fed if they spot you've got bird feed with you! The Castle itself is a little bit on the small side given the scope of the grounds, but definitely worth a visit (and there's something weird about standing in rooms that Henry VIII has been in!). They were getting ready for a classic car show when we were there so we got to have a good look at some Aston Martins parked at the castle.
In the grounds there's various other things as well - there's a bird of prey centre which we didn't have time to visit, boat rides, and various restaurants. I decided to have a go at their maze (always wanted to do one of those!) and while it took a bit of time, we got there in the end. Under the maze there's a network of caves which I'm almost certain are man-made, but they're cool nevertheless.
The only downside to the day was a labelling error on some food I had which left me feeling ill for the rest of the holiday - I went into a cafe on-site and picked up a toastie which was supposed to be Goats cheese, avocado and sun blushed tomatoes - inside the toastie appears to be Goats cheese, spinach, and some mystery sauce loaded with paprika. I'm intolerant to paprika. I took two bites and started feeling sick (plus I scalded my mouth (not because it was too hot, but because paprika). That night I was doubled with stomach cramps and spent the rest of the holiday running to and from the toilet. When I complained the guy just looked at me like he didn't understand what the fuss was about.
The next day we had an easier day, visiting Rochester and looking round some shops. I managed to do something I've always wanted to do in Rochester though - I went to the top of Rochester Castle! The castle is very imposing and offers impressive views over Rochester, Strood and the River Medway. Just be aware - it's not the best place to visit if you're not good with heights!! And it's a total of 199 steps to the top!
After that we went out for dinner in Chatham with our friends.
The next day we went into Chatham to see Guardians of the Galaxy 2 (it was so awesome, but...but I won't spoil it). And we pottered about the Quays where I visited the Cadbury shop (!!!!!!!), after that it was back to our hotel for one last meal before having an early night.
Then it was time to go home! We got the High Speed back to St. Pancras and then got the train back to Glasgow (Cattle class on the way home (never again...)).
And then we were home!
IMO even better than a Season 2, why?
Well - the movie will have a bigger budget than episodes equalling the same length would have, that means higher quality animation, and less repetitive content (I love the routines in YOI but I think we saw Yuuri do Eros *thinks* five times in total, over just 12 eps) so that'll be good. Plus this won't be bound by the constraints of TV: YOI on ice was categorised as a sports anime, not a romance or "boys love" anime so they weren't allowed to show Victuuri's kiss, and I know there was a lot of stuff in the 12 episodes that struggled to make it through the censors and some stuff did get altered so the show would air - a movie won't have those considerations.
I'm trusting that Kubo and Yamamoto will do a good job - the writing was so tight for season 1 and they're already hard at work on this movie - they've both been travelling to ice skating events (the ISU World Championship in Helsinki for example and they stayed in St. Petersburg for a while (where the movie will undoubtedly be partly set since Yuuri moved there to be with and to train with Viktor), so they obviously want to get this right (plus it's making megabucks by anime standards - they really don't want to fuck this up!!)
If we'd moved straight to a second season, there's every chance it could have been rushed to take advantage of the hype surrounding YOI, but a movie is better - less content, but better quality will satisfy the fans, and will give Kubo, Yamamoto and Mappa time to bring together the original animation team and others for a second season - season 1 took about 3 years to make as far as I know, so I don't think we should expect season 2 until late 2018, possibly even 2019, and I'm suspecting it'll be made official when the movie comes out.
In the meantime I don't think there's going to be any stopping the YOI PR Machine or art department - they're churning out so much promotional material (and merch) that there's something new every other week (more like every other day!). And as far as I know the merchandise is selling extremely well.
I still need to wait months for my Nendoroids though!! I've decided not to pre-order Yurio - I'm going to try and pick him up at a later date, just because funds are tight.
I cannot wait for this movie though...it's going to be "wow, amazing!"
Well it feels like a while since I posted (has it been, or does it just feel like it?)
So what's been going on with me?
Not a lot, although my mental health seems to be continuing to improve, although I have had some hiccups with my anxiety in the past week or so.
It was my mum's birthday the other day and we went out for lunch at one of our favourite local places (Duck Bay - if you're ever at Loch Lomond it's not the cheapest but it's far from the dearest and has the best view). I had an amazing burger topped with stilton and bacon, and my mum had roast beef, and we skipped dessert for cocktails (French Martini - my favourite :D)
After that we took some pics from the beach adjacent to the restaurant and got chatting to a lovely woman from St. Kitts and Nevis, and then a few minutes later a Pakistani-Scot and her kids. It's one of the lovely things about living in a touristy place. I wouldn't say Scotland's a racism-free place because that would (sadly) be wishful thinking, but we're certainly not as racist as a number of other majority white countries...but because we're so small and rural we haven't had a lot of immigration so outside of the cities Scotland is pretty white...but in tourist places like where I stay you can meet people from all over the world, and I don't know why some people don't understand what a joy and a privilege that is. I LOVE meeting people from other countries. I have the best conversations with people from elsewhere, be that face to face or online.
So yeah you meet fantastic people from other countries, chat to them for ages...and you go home and you look at the news and...And I don't know whether I want to punch someone or just cry. Like seriously...England and France I like you both, so please get your shit together ASAP.
('specially you England, I'm visiting you in a couple of weeks and I'm stuck with who you vote for)
Anyhoo...I went into politics there, my bad.
Away from the mental health front I've not been so good healthwise. My PCOS appears to be acting up and all that weight I've lost? I've put it all back on again in less than two weeks despite having not altered my diet or exercise regime in any way. I've also got water retention meaning I can't wear my rings (I always wear the rings I got at my 16th and 21st birthdays), and I'm feeling pretty run down. So yeah that's good - brain's behaving but my body isn't :\
I'm hopefully off on holiday soon - a few days visiting friends in the south of England...I'm looking forward to it since I wasn't well enough to visit last year. We're hoping to visit Leeds Castle (which isn't in Leeds - it's just called Leeds Castle), and Canterbury. I won't get much of a chance to see London this time because our time is limited, which is a bit of a shame.
In other news, I'm hoping to be volunteering soon. I'm getting referred to a service that works with people with mental health issues to get us volunteering with a view to returning to employment, so that should be good. It'll give me something to do and give me some structure in my life.
In fandom news...I'm completely stuck on a fanfic I've been writing (ha! like that's news, I'm always stuck on a fic), and I'm actually now watching Boruto. Boruto the anime is actually quite interesting thus far, but Boruto is every bit the bratty jerk I thought he was going to be. He's like Naruto without the charm. The rest of the characters are good though...it's just a shame that the protagonist himself is the weak link.
And I'll leave you with a picture of Loch Lomond looking stunning in some April sunshine!
A fisherman and yours truly (it was windy!)
First up - books!!
This all my TOS, TNG and DS9 novels and some assorted other bits and pieces
These are all of the larger format books (encyclopedias, companions etc). If you look at the bottom right that is something kind of special - it's an original TNG script from the season 1 episode "Haven", and since it's direct from Paramount it even includes dialogue from cut scenes!
And my Voyager books!!!
Following that, it's my Star Trek Fact File binders and the DVD collection. At the bottom there's also some little things - two games (one for Wii, one for PC, a mini phaser, a coaster, a pack of playing cards and a special USB stick for the first reboot movie)
Then all my little ships!!
Comics and tumble-not mugs
And trading cards (I have a binder that holds a few hundred, and then a few hundred more loose or doublers)
Some bits and pieces that I'd missed earlier - some more books, some cds, a cd-rom, a card game and a framed film cell from the first reboot movie
Almost done...here's magazines!
Some magazines and a poster
A poster for Star Trek Into Darkness
And finally, autographs and pictures!
L - R (top row): Dominic Keating, Dwight Schultz, Casey Biggs, Robert Picardo; (middle row) Marina Sirtis, Robert Picardo (and me!), Convention program from 2001 (with a few more autographs inside), Paul McGillion (and me!), Ronny Cox, Paul McGillion (and me and some con friends and bonus - Teryl Rothery!) (bottom row) Chase Masterson, Max Grodénchik, Armin Shimerman and Kitty Swink.
I'm not deleting this LJ, because I've had it for 13 or 14 years, but I won't be updating all that often.
So where else am I apart from LJ?
Tumblr - which is just full of memes and anime these days...I don't have active side-blogs, just one messy tumblr that everything goes into!
AO3 - reading more than writing at the moment but I'm hoping that will change very soon
Instagram - random crap, updated sporadically
Dreamwidth - (almost) a blank canvas
And that's really about it these days :(
I am also on twitter and facebook but they're both clogged up with politics. If you want my details for either of those send me a message :)
The episode was a mixed bag for me
The tone is a bit weird, being both 'kiddy' and kind of dark at the same time. The plot was a bit all over the place and lacking explanation (of course it's to make you tune in next week isn't it)
Basic plot - Boruto is going to the Ninja Academy starting tomorrow. He doesn't want to go and neither does Shikadai (Shikamaru's son), but they kind of have to, even though both boys view being a ninja as old fashioned and obsolete. After parkouring their way through town to buy burgers, they ride on top of a train where Boruto moans about his dad. Shikadai tells him not to embarrass Naruto the next day at their Academy enrolment.
After Shikadai heads home, Boruto bumps into a kid - Denki - getting mugged by other kids. After getting rid of the muggers Boruto finds out Denki is starting at the academy as well but he's also being forced to go by his wealthy father who wants him to toughen up. Boruto tells him not to listen to his father and to stand up for himself. That night Denki tries and fails to do that before being bitten by some sort of Chakra snake (yes, Snake...seems too obvious that it's Orochimaru doing it...Kabuto maybe?)
At the Uzumaki household, Naruto isn't home as he's working through the night to get things ready for the enrolment ceremony the next day. Hinata meanwhile has made dinner. Boruto is late and ungrateful and doesn't understand why Naruto isn't home much, seemingly thinking that Naruto is intentionally ignoring his family. Hinata tries to explain that Naruto's job as Hokage is extremely important, but Boruto dismisses her.
The next day Denki (whose father conveniently owns Konoha's train nextwork), lays a trap for his bullies and puts them on a runaway train (yes, really), but Boruto swoops in an tries to save the day. In the process we learn that Boruto has a dojutsu (super-powered eye basically), that I'd reckon is either a Tenseigan (an advanced version of what his mother has), or an implant that can see chakra.
After stopping Denki from hurting his bullies, Boruto commandeers the train and crashes it into Hokage rock, disrupting the Academy enrolment ceremony, mortifying Naruto and horrifying Iruka, Shino, Anko, Moegi and Konohamaru. Boruto shows no remorse.
So on one level it was quite interesting - I want to know more about Boruto's eye - is it Natural or has someone done something to him. Who was responsible for the Chakra snake that attacked Denki? How much has Konoha changed? How are all out old favourite characters getting on?
On the other hand...Boruto seems as stupid as his father, but has an arrogance Naruto never possessed as a small child. Yes Naruto bordered on arrogance right before the Fourth Shinobi World War but was soon made aware of it and corrected his attitude. Boruto's arrogance seems an integral part of his character, and he also seems quite mean - he's willing to trash Hokage rock just for attention, not caring that stonemasons will need to repair it, and they damaged the train line, inconveniencing people. The worst Naruto ever did was daub paint around, and he was struggling greatly with depression at the time. Boruto comes across as an egotist ,compared to Naruto who was treated with utter fear and disdain for the villagers who acted up out of sheer frustration and grief.
I'm going to keep watching this new show, but not for Boruto himself, because I don't like him.
I'll be watching for just about everyone else.
So I have the house to myself XD
Plans for the week:
Tomorrow - I'm tortoise-sitting for a few hours (mum's friend she's going on holiday with has a tortoise called Bob that our next door neighbour is looking after, but she's out tomorrow afternoon (I'll take pictures because he's adorable!))
Thursday - Gutting the kitchen!! I can't wait! I can only do this without my mum's interference, and I'm going to be ruthless XD
Friday - Gutting the bathroom - same as above. I'm also going to take a picture of just how much crap she's bought she doesn't need (we've got like literally 30 moisturisers and body lotions...one of each is mines, the rest is hers)
Saturday - Japanese food day!!! I'll be endeavouring to make Fluffy Japanese pancakes, as well as Katsudon!!!! I was going to try making pork or chicken ramen, but it's a lot of ingredients and I am only one person, so Katsudon makes more sense :D
Sunday - Whatever I want to do - probably watch TV all day XD
Monday - Guess I better visit the step-brother :\
Tuesday - Get things in order for my mum's return!
So instead I decided to try the leave-in one, and got it in purple since I'm going to Braehead Clan match this weekend and they play in purple.
...I really shouldn't have bothered. Despite using the whole tube on my very fine hair, there's no more than a tint visible.
Oh well :(
My two faves - Naruto and Kakashi!
And obligatory pics with the Ochatomos I already have
Naruto and his dad Minato
Kakashi and his sensei
Naruto and his bff/arch nemesis/bro
That's me done with Ochatomos (unless I can get a hold of maskless Kakashi or if Yuri!!! on Ice ones are released!)
Back to watch Yuri on Ice for the bajillionth time I go!
(Seriously - watch this anime - it's a complete ray of sunshine)
If you want to watch Yuri on Ice...or even if you don't but you like anime, let me know - I have some fCrunchyroll premium guest passes going spare!
Yes once again nuclear warheads were within half a mile of my house.
Get them the fuck out of my country!
I'm going to post every time this happens because it's becoming a far more regular occurrence, but it's difficult because obviously the convoys are never announced and it's up to CND to monitor them. Normally English CND alerts Scottish CND and the peace camp (https://faslanepeacecamp.wordpress.
Like I've said previously this used to happen every other month, but now it's far more common. Yet despite how often it happens, I've only ever seen them with my own eyes on maybe four or five occasions because they go through during quieter hours...all very clandestine you see, though on one occasion I did see two protestors getting arrested. I was only in my early teens...if I saw the same scene now I'd be getting arrested too.
I hate it. I hate the bombs. I hate the fact they're stored so close to my home. I hate that the subs that carry them are based so close to home. I hate that the biggest arms depot in the whole of Europe is just a few miles north of it. It also means despite the fact that Scotland doesn't want any of it, if there is a nuclear war, we are the best tactical target for an enemy to take out, and if that happens...Scotland will be gone. Like seriously, our population is so concentrated within the area that would be directly affected that we would never recover as a nation.
I'm sorry for ranting. It's just this really upsets me.
